The 5 Rookie Mistakes New Change Leaders Make
I’m here to give you a few rookies mistakes new change leaders make. If you want to succeed, watch out for these trip ups!
Thinking implementing change is linear
- Employees are not machines and they don’t change their behavior just because you say so.
- It is an iterative process of people letting go of what’s known and building a relationship with the new.
Assuming that other factors aren’t influencing your change implementation
- The status of things when you start your change will quickly change throughout.
- Constantly reassess and take pulse checks.
- And then adjust to accommodate.
Forgetting to tell people what’s staying the same
- Not everything is altered when implementing a change.
- So tell people what’s staying the same so that they can be open to what is.
Not planning for resistance
- This is just not an option.
- It will happen and you want to be prepared.
- Listen for different perspectives and identify its root cause.
- Use resistance as a positive resource.
Presuming your Leader Sponsors don’t need hand-holding
- They need more than you think.
- Often they haven’t truly grasped how you need to use them.
- And they won’t tell you in an effort to save face.
- Follow up and then follow up again.
