I’m here to give you a few rookies mistakes new change leaders make. If you want to succeed, watch out for these trip ups!

Thinking implementing change is linear

  • Employees are not machines and they don’t change their behavior just because you say so.
  • It is an iterative process of people letting go of what’s known and building a relationship with the new.

Assuming that other factors aren’t influencing your change implementation

  • The status of things when you start your change will quickly change throughout.
  • Constantly reassess and take pulse checks.
  • And then adjust to accommodate.

Forgetting to tell people what’s staying the same

  • Not everything is altered when implementing a change.
  • So tell people what’s staying the same so that they can be open to what is.

Not planning for resistance

  • This is just not an option.
  • It will happen and you want to be prepared.
  • Listen for different perspectives and identify its root cause.
  • Use resistance as a positive resource.

Presuming your Leader Sponsors don’t need hand-holding

  • They need more than you think.
  • Often they haven’t truly grasped how you need to use them.
  • And they won’t tell you in an effort to save face.
  • Follow up and then follow up again.
