My Manager Just Showed Up at My Door Unannounced

There was an interesting question that came across one of my news feeds today. The question…..
“It is ok for your manager to just show up at your home unannounced?”
The discussions on this thread regarding this question were “colorful” to say the least. Every response from “not if they valued their life” to “if they saw how I am dressed, it might be embarrassing for both of us”.
Leaders…please please please! Don’t put your employees in this awkward position! Do not show up at their door unannounced. All you are probably doing is exposing your own insecurities and lack of trust in your employee. Doing this shows extreme insensitivity, lack of emotional intelligence and crossing boundaries on your part. Showing up unannounced would certainly result in a demoralized relationship, breakdown of trust between you and your employee and just adds more stress to an already stress-filled situation.
Rather focus your energies on increasing trust and enhancing the connections with your employees. If you are looking to create engagement and loyalty, take care to act in a way that respects the individual. Seek ways to support them and ask them what they need. Be “other focused” and sensitive to the specific circumstances that individual is dealing with during this difficult time. That person is probably doing their best to continue being a value-add to you and your organization.
And when all is said and done, the way you treat your employees during these unique times, will yield you greater commitment and harder work from them in the end!
